Passenger rail is coming home to Geyserville after nearly 70 years. Here’s how you can weigh in.
Imagine stepping onto a train right here in Geyserville to connect to Healdsburg, or eventually all the way down to Larkspur. For the first time since the 1950s, that’s a real possibility.
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is actively evaluating whether to build a passenger rail station in Geyserville as part of the voter-approved northern extension of the rail system. But before moving forward, SMART wants to hear from you, your family, and your business.
What This Means for Geyserville
A station here would be transformative for our community. Here’s what it could deliver:
- Better transportation options. Direct rail access for residents, workers, and visitors to other parts of the North Bay without relying on a car.
- Economic opportunity. Increased connectivity typically brings new customers to local businesses and makes it easier for employees to reach jobs.
- Regional connectivity. SMART’s goal is to complete a full passenger rail system from Larkspur to Cloverdale. A Geyserville station positions our community as a key hub.
- Sustainable transportation. Fewer cars on Highway 128 means reduced traffic and a lighter environmental footprint.
The proposed location? Near Highway 128 and Remmel Road, right in the middle of where we live and work.
Your Input Is Critical (And Easy)
Here’s the thing: SMART isn’t just building this station for us. They’re building it with us. And they need your feedback to get it right.
The easiest way to weigh in? Take the survey.
The survey asks straightforward questions:
- What matters most to you about transportation?
- When would you most likely ride SMART?
- What amenities would you want at the station?
Your answers directly shape future planning. This isn’t a rubber-stamp situation; your feedback genuinely informs whether the station gets built and how it’s designed.
Survey deadline: Sunday, August 16, 2026, at midnight. Don’t miss it.

Why Now?
In 2008, North Bay voters approved a comprehensive passenger rail and pathway system extending from Larkspur to Cloverdale. SMART has been building toward that vision ever since. But the original rules limited stations in unincorporated areas.
That changed in 2024 when state legislation was updated to allow SMART to explore a Geyserville station. SMART’s Five-Year Strategic Plan embraced this opportunity, and the Board of Directors formally directed staff in June 2026 to begin public engagement.
By evaluating a Geyserville station now, SMART can break the northern extension into two nine-mile phases instead of one 18-mile project. Smaller projects are often more competitive for grant funding, which means faster progress toward getting trains to Cloverdale.
This isn’t a detour from the bigger goal. It’s the smartest path to get there.
What Could the Station Look Like?
The proposed location offers real advantages:
- Centrally positioned near housing, jobs, and businesses
- Located within SMART’s existing railroad right-of-way (no major land acquisition needed)
- Less than a quarter mile from connecting transit services
- Space available for vehicle parking and bike infrastructure
If built, the station could include a passenger boarding platform, shelter, bicycle parking, vehicle parking, bikeshare connections, and first/last-mile transit access.
The Survey Is Your Best Opportunity to Have a Say
Let’s be direct: The survey is where your voice carries the most weight. It’s where SMART collects the data they need to make decisions about whether the station serves real community needs and what those needs look like.
Whether you’d use the train daily, occasionally, or not at all, your perspective matters. Whether you work in Geyserville, live here, own a business, or visit regularly, your input helps SMART understand who this station serves and how to design it right.
